Reflection for the 1st Sunday of Lent C2013

(Lenten Reflection 2013)

LENT is the spring time of human spirit.  It is the season of breaking the outer shell of human life to let the human spirit soar up high in renewed hope and vitality.

Faithful adherence to the triad of Lenten observance of Fasting, Prayer and Almsgiving guarantees a life-giving spring time for human spirit.  Fasting unleashes the human spirit from the chain of human desire that enslaves.  Abstaining from what glorifies both the natural and created human cravings in Lent sets the human spirit’s focus on essentials.

Human spirit lives in time and exposes itself to its profanity.  Prayer is to make the whole cycle of time pure and sacred.  Moments spent for and in prayer provide a secured shelter against the stress of worldly excesses.  Prayer increases one’s productivity and dependability without which one is made a complete liability.

Almsgiving materially helps the other but inwardly enriches the giver.  What fulfils the longing of human spirit is the reverse of what the world understands.  Self-gain and self-benefit become the rules of the world that instead of eliminating human dissatisfactions, deepens more the anxiety and restlessness.   Sincere almsgiving, on the other hand, is an act that mysteriously incites the deep human sigh of completeness and satisfaction.

May this season of Lent be a rich spring time for you and me.  Amen.
