Gospel Reflection for the 5th Sunday OT 2012

“Rising very early before dawn, Jesus left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed,” (Mk 1.35).

Every single day for God who is in mission in Jesus is always a day of unfolding the richness of His healing grace.  Going around villages, preaching, healing, and driving out demons become the normal daily routine of Him through which His desire to reach out and the people’s deepest desire to be healed have been satisfied.

Aware of the urgency, magnitude and depth of His mission, Jesus has been properly understood as an early riser missionary.  The too early timing of being awake and the intense quiet of the desert to which Jesus regularly indulge with indicate the indispensable need to be alone with the Alone in prayer.  Quieting the human soul in prayer before engaging into day to day unfolding of grace which is buried in people’s daily struggle merits its being not without.

Jesus Himself has no any single day which is not started with being quiet and still with His Father.  In this quiet solitude of prayer, Jesus’ mission finds its heart and soul.

Prayer is the outpouring of self unto God and God’s outpouring of Himself unto us.  Let us be Jesus’ missionaries of healing absorbed, shielded and inwardly made credible by prayer uttered and offered at the ‘very early before dawn,’ and cultivated in the quiet space of our own daily desert.  Amen.
