Gospel Reflection for the 3rd Sunday of Advent B2011

Wilderness experience is that of confusion and being out of focus.  Wilderness is an experience of being deserted and lost.

John’s material deprivation in the wilderness, however, resonates the contrast between the life in the city of abundance, comfort, pleasure, power and control and the life in the desert that keeps the soul in focus on what matters and therefore essential.

John as the voice crying out intends to be heard in and by the wilderness of the city, where people are confused and made out of focus by the superficial enticement of easy and comfortable life.  The city is the real wilderness that distorts the vision of the soul and makes the journey of life burdensome and miserable.

Advent puts forward the simple life of John in the desert to remind us of an urgent call to refocus ourselves on what really matters in life.  It is not to satisfy our desire but to make the journey in search of the eternal object of heart’s longing satisfying and encouraging.

Let us take a look at John’s life in the wilderness and let him refocus the inner lens of our souls.  Amen.
