(Jn 6.1-15)

“They saw signs...”

This statement opens and closes the story of Jesus feeding the multitude.  Taking a closer look at the surrounding details of the statement, it seems that mere seeing the signs is still far from getting into the heart of Jesus’ action.  Mere sight just dwells on the surface, its focus is on what is visible.

Jesus’ actions are signs pointing to something deeper and unseen.

Even if the human eyes are widely open and amazed at the wonder of what Jesus does, it is only when we close them in faith that we come to know WHO He is.  Eyes are normally closing themselves when the heart is in deep dialogue with Jesus in prayer.  And that’s where what is unseen is made clear.

May we be led by the signs to the Sign-maker.  Amen.
