(Mk 12:38-44)

Wonder and frustration loom within the heart of Jesus in witnessing how people in the temple treasury drop their donations.  Regardless of the size and amount of what is given, what Jesus sees is the heart of the giver.

Generosity out of surplus is superficial; generosity beyond one’s want is sacrificial and so redemptive.  What really sustains the temple is not the matter given but the spirit in giving.  It is the latter for which the temple exists, through which it remains.  Temple makes the act of giving a self-sacrifice, a self-donation that inwardly enriches others.  All these things, in Jesus, have been realized.

We may be lacking of what to give but never anyone falls short of how to give.  Let us be enriched by properly knowing and doing the how of giving.  Amen.
