Gospel Reflection for 28th Sunday OT B2012

(Mk 10.17-30)

“…what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Mark puts this question on the lips of the rich young man “who ran up, knelt down and asked the Good Teacher,” as the sole statement around which his gospel draws its details.  How to inherit eternal life has not been explained and made known except that “for human beings it is impossible, but not for God.”

Even the summon to “go, sell everything you have, and give to the poor…” does not benefit eternal life but just having “treasure in heaven.”  The following invitation of Jesus, although sounds to be getting there, only indicates continuous search:  “come, follow me.”

What the Gospel suggests, it seems, is that eternal life is not and can not be the fruit of human effort but pure, sheer heavenly gift.  As human as we are, there’s always in us “one thing which is lacking.”  An emptiness that no human effort can fill in, an emptiness that keeps the human heart in search, till it finds its rest in God.  I just hope that with this, eternal life begins.  Amen
