THE SON OF MAN IS THE LITTLE INNOCENT, HELPLESS CHILD

(Mk 9.30-37)

Miles away from Jerusalem, in Galilee, Jesus sees it fit to solemnly explain to his disciples for the second time what awaits him in the city as the Son of Man.  The way Jesus lives and proclaims his identity as the Messiah transforms Jerusalem, with its highest leadership, into a hostile place.

By making the passion known to his disciples, Jesus signifies his unfazed determination not to compromise his mission.  What makes him deeply challenged, which requires him great gentleness and perseverance, is the lack of genuine care and concern on the part of his disciples whose preoccupation for worldly greatness makes them insensible to what the Lord is passionately predicting.

Focusing on one’s personal glory diminishes Jesus on the cross.

In his gentleness and persevering spirit, Jesus as the Son of Man, takes the form of an innocent and helpless child to set the standard of greatness.  Accepting Jesus, embracing him like an innocent child made helpless on the cross, bestows genuine but hidden greatness upon us.  Amen.
