Gospel Reflection for 16th Sunday OT B2012

(Mc 6.30-34)

It looks like a great success.  People started “coming and going in great numbers.”  So hectic the time of each day is made for Jesus and His team: “no opportunity even to eat.”  Without feeling exhausted, due to being put on fire by the excitement of being heard and followed by the people, the apostles increase their vulnerability and so in danger of subtly succumbing to self aggrandizement.

“Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while,” is Jesus’ preventive invitation which by the way is prevented by mob rule to happen.   Driven by their desire to be healed and be freed from evil presence, the people hasten to come around Jesus and the apostles, probably becoming wild and unruly.  Thus, in His merciful heart, Jesus sees them “like sheep without a shepherd.”

This whole incident is laying down the corner stone that sustains the apostles in satisfying the valid longing of the sheep: “come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.”

Point to us by Jesus, our desert and place of rest help us discover our worth as well as the reason of our work.  Amen.
